Czech Christmas

St Nicholas Day

St. Nicholas' Day is on 6th December but we celebrate it

during the night of 5th December. In this evening

St. Nicholas together with Angels and Devils come to our houses.

St. Nicholas has got a beautiful yellow coat, yellow boots

and a white hat with a yellow cross. Angels have beautiful wings and dresses.

They usually have beautiful hair too. Devils have horns

and a very long red tongue. They are black and sometimes

they have a tail and a chain. They have a sack.

If children were bad, the devil puts them inside the sack.

But only for a small moment. Then the children can come back.

The children are afraid of the Devils but they like

St. Nicholas and Angels who usually carry a basket

with sweets for good children and coal for bad children.

Let's go to one of the flats now...

Today is 5th December. Now it is the evening.

We are in a flat with three children. We are waiting for

St. Nicholas' parade. Somebody is ringing. I am looking who it is.

I hope, it is St. Nicholas. Yes, it is. I am opening the door.

There is St. Nicholas, two angels and five devils.

Children are begging not to let them in. But I am letting them in.

The Angels are carrying a basket with some sweets.

Children are looking at the basket. Now one of the devils

is going to the children. He is asking them if they were good.

They say yes. The Angels are giving them some goodies.

The Devils give them some coal too. They are frightening the kids.

Now they are finally leaving while St. Nicholas is smiling.

They are waving their hands. The next St. Nicholas' visit will be next year.

The children are happy and they will remember this evening for a long time.

17th November in the Czech school

17th November is the National Holiday in the Czech Republic. People stay at home and children do not go to school. That is why we celebrate it earlier at school. The programme is prepared by the students and the teachers themselves. It begins in the gym, where we can watch some dances and gymnastics. After this performance students can choose, some sports or music and drama. They can also draw pictures in the Art room or take part in the chemistry and physics laboratiories. This year there was also a new drama group.

We celebrate 17th November to remember the year 1939 when Czech students took part in the funeral of one of them and they protested against German troops in Czechoslovakia. As the result of this demonstration, Czech Universities were closed for 6 years. A lot of Czech students were sent to concentration camps.

On 17th November 1989- Czech students protested against the Communist government and the polical situation in the country. They were stopped by the State police, but the whole nation wasn´t stopped and the Velvet revolution started. We have become free. Since that time we have been trying to live in democracy and we would never like to have the communist government back.

3rd December - Day of Disabled Persons

The 3rd of November was proclaimed the International Day of Disabled Persons by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992. It's aimed to promote understanding about disability issues and to increase awarness of gains form integrating disabled persons in every aspect of life.

This idea is present in our school life as we have an "integrative class". This year to celebrate 3rd December the students from class II A invited a class from another school with integrative classes. We prepared a talk show and then our guests demonstrated a beatboxing show. They told us about their school and we presented them ours.

19th November in our school

19th November was a special day for our school

19th November was a special day for our school - there was a ceremony of giving Gimnazjum nr 14 the name of prof. Jan Karski. Many guests were invited to attend this ceremony. Among them there were: the president of Ruda Śląska – Mr Andrzej Stania, the representatives of educational authorities, city councillors, directors of organizations our school cooperates with. The guest of honour during our celebration was Ms Kaya Mirecka-Ploss – the executive director of The Jan Karski Institute for Tolerance and Dialogue in Washington (with the branch in Ruda Śląska since 17 November 2008).

The motto of the ceremony were Karski’s words: “We live as long as the memory about us remains alive”. To present the life of our patron and values he found important in his life the students prepared a performance based on Karski’s book “The story of secret state”. The show presented Karski’s fight for truth and courage during the World War II and trust he put in young people. As youth was so important for him the students and teachers are going to take steps to make moral values present in their everyday lives.

1st November in our city.

On 1st Novemberthe young people from our school for the fourth time collected money at the cemetery in Bielszowice. Students and teachers gathered donations to the John Paul II Hospice in Ruda Śląska. It's worth mentioning that year by year the generosity of people from Bielszowice is growing, because this time we collected 3459.72 zł. Once again, thanks to this charity action we could realize that "whoever believes in the goodness of man, this creates the goodness in man" (Jean Paul Sartre)

TEACHERS TOO ARE GOD'S CREATURES

On the 14th of October Polish teachers and students celebrated National Education Day (commonly known as Teacher’s Day). On the day before this holiday students invited their teachers for the performance. The members of school Drama Club presented the play titled "TEACHERS TOO ARE GOD’S CREATURES". The main character is the teacher who is looking for a job. It all starts in paradise where God - after Adam and Ewa - creates the teacher to help them teach their children. But violence used by the teacher isn't a suitable method in paradise, so he loses his job. Then he finds the job in hell, but he loses it again because this time his methods are too kind and humane and little devils become angels, so it is shameful for them. Finally, the teacher comes on Earth, to Gimnazjum nr 14 in Ruda Śląska. He talks with the students about their plans for future and sharply criticizes them. Ten years later God comes to him and shows him the newspaper, in which numerous successes of his former students are described. The teacher explains that he complained in order to motivate students to work, because this is his role:-)
